All You Need to Know About Messi's Endorsement Deals

Lionel Messi is quite the global attraction for companies to utilize his fame in order to reach consumers. Messi has a wide following on social media that provides a significant marketing platform for global companies. Messi has deals with companies such as Gatorade, Adidas, Huawei, and Mengniu Group. Currently, FC Barcelona pays him a lucrative deal of around $33 million per year. His total endorsements rack up nearly $27 million per year. Messi's longtime rival, Cristiano Ronaldo makes $47 million per year in endorsements, which nearly doubles Messi's endorsement portfolio. Below are some insights into some of Messi's endorsement deals.

Adidas Deal
Messi's largest endorsement is with Adidas, which sums up to $10 million per year. Adidas is a global provider of sports apparel and merchandise that competes with the likes of Nike and Under Armour. The lifetime deal will showcase to all fĂștbol enthusiasts that Adidas is the best of the best when it comes to fĂștbol apparel.

Gatorade Deal
Gatorade is a global provider of sports beverages and protein supplements for athletes. Messi's deal value is unknown, but he is seen is multiple commercials worldwide for Gatorade. FC Barcelona is also endorsed by Gatorade. Earlier in 2018, the three brands combined to win YouTube Ad of the Year, which can be seen below. The ad coins Messi's famous line for Gatorade, "when you have a dream nothing can stop you."

Huawei Deal
Huawei is a Chinese smartphone and data provider. This deal was valued at nearly $6 million per year.

Mengniu Group Deal
Mengniu Group is a Chinese dairy farm provider that also sponsored the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Messi has been sponsored by Mengniu since 2018, but Argentina's poor World Cup performance didn't disrupt change in his endorsement deal.

Concluding Questions

While Messi will go down as a legendary soccer player, do you think his endorsement bonuses will decrease significantly or remain relatively constant over his retirement?

  1. I think Lionel Messi is a strong player on and off the field. His social media and public appearances give me the feeling he is a stand up guy unlike Ronaldo. It's also smart to have an endorsement deal with an Asian company considering the emerging relationship between the football industry and Asian market.
Gatorade and Adidas are two global brands that will also help him in be remembered in the eyes of the Americans. Gatorade especially will engrave his face in our brains. People drink that stuff like it's the elixir of life. Adidas is definitely on the come up in America as well. I always used to think it was the bottom of the totem pole when it came to athletic brands, but its new bouji approach on athletic wear has caught a lot of attention.
It also helps that Messi is just overall cute to look at. If he keeps up his positive appearance and continues to thrive on the football field I think the public will continue to be interested even after retirement.

    1. Sarah,
I agree that Messi has an outstanding PR status unlike Ronaldo and many others. He will definitely always stay in the public realm as long as he keeps his positive image. It would be awesome to see his endorsements continue even after he retires.

  2. That is crazy that Messi is making $27 million dollars each year just on endorsements. Wow! Must be nice. I knew Gatorade and Adidas had an endorsement deal with Messi and this makes more sense because their brands are already connected to sports. But that is very interesting that Huawei and Mengnui Group also endorse Messi. Like Sarah mentioned, I think these Asian companies hit the jackpot and lucked out from making this deal with Messi because it seems that the demand for the football industry is only going to rise in the upcoming years in the Chinese market. In response to your concluding question, I do not think Messi's endorsement bonuses will decrease over his retirement. Messi is only getting more and more popular and I think people are only going to like him more. Just like most other athletes, they remain popular for several years after their retirement. (Jackie)

    1. What's wild to me is that Messi makes more money strictly on endorsements than he does just on playing the sport of football. I think Messi's popularity also stems from just how diverse the companies that sponsor him are. He has American companies, European companies, Chinese companies, etc. When people see Messi's face at the forefront of their favorite shoe store or sports drink bottle, they become a fan by association.

Athletes can earn more from endorsement, advertising and sponsorship deals then from what they actually get paid for doing. The very thing that has made them so famous, but the reality is that it is a far from rare occurrence. The greatest sporting figures are recognizable faces across the globe so it is not that surprising that they are targeted by major companies and brands. Furthermore, some sports do not pay their athletes as generous as one may think. The more commonly watched sports such as soccer, football, basketball and boxing all pay their top athletes huge fees, but many of the athletes who compete in less watched sports are not the most well -off and do not always earn a great deal. As such, these athletes often rely on endorsement deals for a hefty chunk of their income. Here are 15 athletes who m
